What is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)?

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), also known as Paintless Dent Removal is a method of removing minor dents and dings without removing any paint from the vehicle. This is done by massaging the dent out from the back of the panel using specialized tools. We sometimes refer to ourselves as “metal massage therapists.”

Most commonly, paintless dent repair is used when there is hail damage to a vehicle, door dings, minor creases, or any larger sized dents. Sometimes, people will find themselves confusing PDR with regular dent repair. It’s important to note that the difference between the two is that PDR is a less invasive way to remove dents that didn’t destroy the vehicle’s paint job. Traditional dent repair on the other hand will utilize body fillers that allow the dent to reach surface level. Then, the area is typically sanded and repaired.

Pro’s to PDR

  • The technique is relatively simple to do. The technician massages the metal back into its place without sanding, bonding, or painting
  • Generelly, PDR’s are more cost effective
  • PDR’s can usually be completed in less than 24 hours
  • Usually long lasting

Con’s to PDR

  • May not work on deeper and more complex dents

Pro’s to Traditional Dent Repair

  • Generally, the best option for deeper dents
  • Can repair damage done to the paint as well

Con’s to Traditional Dent Repair

  • Tends to be more expensive and can take longer to complete

What are the benefits of Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)?

No grinding, fillers, primers, or Bondo are needed because your factory paint is not disturbed. There are no problems with filler or paint shrinkage months after the repair as is typical with most body shop repairs.

Cost is also a major benefit of PDR. Repairs are typically between one-quarter to one-third the cost of conventional dent repair.

Save time! Paintless dent repair can be done in hours to a day, whereas a traditional body shop may take weeks for the same type of damage.

PDR is environmentally friendly! Since this process keeps the original factory paint on your vehicle, there is no need for the paint, chemicals, or other toxins that are used extensively in body shops when repairing dents.

Will my paint be damaged?

No. Today’s factory paints are very flexible and will not be damaged in any way by this process. PDR is the only way to repair a dent and still keep your factory paint.

Will my dents be 100% gone?

In many cases, yes! We may not be able to make severe dents completely disappear, but we will certainly get it to a much more acceptable damage level. Even on larger dents, the result is truly amazing. During the estimate process, we will let you know the estimated percentage of removal.

Can any dent be fixed?

No. Some dents are too deep and are overstretched. Dents the size of a dinner plate or larger can be fixed successfully, as long as they are not too deep. On the other hand, some dents that are as small as a dime but very deep, cannot be fixed using PDR because the metal is too stretched. Cracked paint can also be an indication that a dent is too deep.

Access is important. We need to be able to get behind the dent to perform PDR. If we can access the area behind, we can often massage out the dent with the Paintless Dent Repair process.

The most common dents fixed are the size of a golf ball and under. Most minor dents can be repaired. About 5% of minor dents can’t be fixed due to depth or location. Areas such as some quarter panel opening lips, some forward areas of heavily braced hoods, or the very edges of some panels are examples of bad locations.

How much does Paintless Dent Repair cost?

The cost of paintless dent repair depends on location, size, and severity. In order to get accurate pricing, please stop by our shop with the vehicle, so that we can evaluate it. Things like aluminum hoods, double metal layers, overstretched metal, etc. can affect the cost of your repair.
